The UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism presents
Covering the World: The Logistics and Challenges of International Reporting
- a skills-based, hands-on day of panels and workshops. The conference will take place on April 30 at North Gate Hall on the UC Berkeley campus and will cover everything from how to plan an overseas project, who to talk to when on the ground, how to best protect yourself and your sources, how to report in war zones and remote places, how to write the story once you're back, and more.

Participants include Elizabeth Farnsworth of the NewsHour, Robert Collier of the San Francisco Chronicle, Sam Quiñones of the LA Times, Rone Tempest of the LA Times, Lowell Bergman of the New York Times, Eric Stover of the Human Rights Center and many more.

The conference is free to students and reporters, but you must RSVP if you would like to participate. The schedule for the conference is

Tentative Schedule for "Covering the World":

8:45- 9:30 Coffee

9:30-11:45 "Getting to the Heart of the Story": The logistics of reporting well in foreign lands. From story conception to what to pack; from paperwork to knowing who to talk to and knowing whom to trust to dealing with editors, to avoiding the pitfalls of parachute journalism.

Noon-1:00 Lunch, photography presentation with Q & A

1:15-3:00 Breakout workshops. Hands-on sessions aimed at honing skills in particular areas.

A. Travel writing with Don George of the Lonely Planet.

B. Cultural reporting: Finding the compelling in ordinary life, with author Sam Quiñones.

C. The intersection of journalism and human rights reporting, with Eric Stover of UC Berkeley Human Rights Center

3:00-3:30 Break: Refreshments.

3:30-5:30 "Working with local partners". International reporting simply wouldn't get done without reliable fixers and local sources willing to take western reporters to the heart of the story. These local guides do so at considerable risk. This panel will examine the reporters' responsibility to protect their partners on the ground.

5:30-6:30 reception
