WHAT IS YJA?
A five-day summer workshop held at San Francisco State University July 23-27 that provides hands-on training for high school journalism advisors and teachers. The workshop has two parts. A four-day curriculum workshop happens Monday through Thursday. A one-day workshop on matching journalism curriculum to University of California "G" elective requirements happens Friday. Teachers can attend one workshop or both.
WHAT WILL ADVISERS LEARN?
From Monday through Thursday: teachers learn new methods and techniques for teaching high school journalism. They compile a portfolio of practical lessons that they can apply in class. On Friday: teachers learn how to adjust their curriculum to meet University of California "G" elective requirements.
WHO WILL TEACH SESSIONS?
Paul Kandell, Palo Alto Unified School District English and Journalism teacher, and Tracy Anne Sena, Journalism teacher at Convent of the Sacred Heart High School in San Francisco. Kandell advises Verde and The Paly Voice and was one of four Dow Jones Newspaper Fund 2006 Distinguished Advisors. Sena was also recognized by the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund as a Special Recognition Advisor in 2006 and was a Fellowship recipient in 2002.
WHAT WILL YJA COST? The four-day curriculum class costs $350. The UC curriculum course costs $115.
HOW DO I REGISTER? Complete the online application and mail a $50 non-refundable deposit towards your registration fees by July 13 to: CIIJ 1600 Holloway Ave, HUM 307 San Francisco, CA 94132. Make checks for the workshop and housing payable to CIIJ. Checks for course credit should be made out to The College of Extended Learning. IS FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE? Applicants in need of financial assistance are encouraged to apply for the California Newspaper and Publishers Association Newspaper Advisor Grant. Awards are $200.
