Neighborhood Video Journalists wanted!
contact MARC PRAGER
A major Internet portal is making a major push to increase its neighborhood coverage on local home pages in major cities – including San Francisco -- and has asked TurnHere to work with filmmakers to create some compelling short online videos that viewers in your neighborhood will want to click on and watch.
Here are three of the series we’ve gotten the green light for:
* Intrigued by local celebrities? You can do a series of videos on what they’re doing, stories that reveal their secrets, a tour of their house, doing some on-camera demos, what they do on their days off, etc. Local celebrities can be a news reporter, chef, politician, sports figure, entertainer, and so on.
* Have any locally-known contacts who are experts in their field? An up-and-coming Julia Child? You can shoot them in some how-to videos. For example, topics could include cooking a romantic dinner, maintaining cars, planting a garden, tips to help kids excel at school or in sports, and more.
* Are you the type of person who knows everything about their neighborhood? Or know someone who conducts walking tours who wants a little publicity? You can create a series of short videos explaining local mysteries or presenting the real story behind local legends. Examples: What’s the story behind this abandoned building? What used to be in this spot? What’s underneath this park?
Please note that these videos are not supposed to be overproduced or heavily edited; they should have a feeling of immediacy and authenticity. For example, no music track is needed. Each video does need to look and sound professional (not user-generated) but beyond that the most important aspects are a good story and visual and narrative hooks to keep the viewer interested.
The filmmakers who I feel will thrive on these projects are those who have a feel for journalism and who are truly interested in these subjects, as well as being able to come up with their own ideas as well. Why take part? Here’s a top 10 list I came up for why this should appeal to some filmmakers:
1. Work for a nationally known and respected brand.
2. Get local recognition – thousands in your local community will see your work.
3. Provides a sense of civic purpose.
4. Get your voice heard.
5. Gives a great reason to meet people you want to meet (local athlete, etc.)
6. A great way to build your portfolio and get noticed for more TurnHere work.
7. A new way to meet prospective clients for commercial video work.
8. You’re interested in more journalistic assignments.
9. You’ll never be bored if you love making video.
10. Opportunity to make money while refining production skills.
If you are interested, let me know immediately as I am commissioning several series in certain markets including SF for the pilot phase of the project.
