Summer internship in news media and public affairs

The U.S. Geological Survey’s Office of Communications at Menlo Park seeks an intern with a strong work ethic to assist in news media and public affairs and related assignments. The ability to handle multiple simultaneous tasks and complete projects under tight deadlines is required, as well strong communication and interpersonal skills. Training or experience in journalism or media relations is desired, as is any customer service experience.

 Duties: Depending on skill level and interest, student will

• assist staff in preparing responses to inquiries from reporters

• assist with planning and execution of press conferences and news events

• seek out and collect news clips resulting from USGS news releases or interviews

• work with scientists to write news releases, record podcasts, and create other information products

• assist staff with planning social media engagements

• create talking-points on various science subjects

 

Requirements: 

Must be a U.S. citizen. Successful applicant will be subject to background check and fingerprinting.

Must be a student working toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree in journalism, mass communications, public relations, radio-television or a related field, with a strong focus or interest in government and/or science.

Location: Menlo Park, California

Start and end dates negotiable. Internship is for a maximum of 12 weeks. Full time preferred, but part time negotiable.

Salary: GS-3 (college freshman or sophomore) or GS-4 (junior or senior). GS-5 (graduate student)
